Have you ever heard the maxim, “Charity begins at home”?
The general meaning of “charity” is benevolence or voluntary giving to the poor. In regards to the family, this means that our first responsibility is to care for the needs beneath our own roof. Then, according to our means, to reach out to the poor and needy in the community around us. In the Christian context, however, charity refers to the highest form of love: self-giving and self-sacrificing devotion. The application, however is the same. This form of “charity” should be practiced first at home, in the setting God has designed for the fullest expression of love. From that seedbed, it can then be extended to those around us who are lonely and in need of kindness. How is this possible? The truth is: Charity of any kind doesn’t really begin at home. It begins in the heart that has been touched and transformed by God’s love. Home is simply the venue where this love is displayed. And so we invite you to let God plant His love in the depths of your being. As it works its way out, those in your family will be the first to know. Next Steps... I will let God’s love flow through me to my family and to others around me.
