The bridge across Jennings Run was only about 2 feet wide. But the height was much greater. Perhaps 10 - 15 feet. While the water was not deep, the rocky creek bed was not inviting. And the narrow bridge had no railing. It was the perfect place for kids to dare each other to cross.
The secret to safely navigating this expanse was to fix one’s eyes on the opposite side, and not look down. As we come to the end of 2015, the same advice can apply. Whatever dangers presented themselves in the old year, we are wise to fix our gaze on the future and all that God can bring into it. Looking down at the problems can cripple us with fear. Looking inward at our failure can cripple us with guilt. And looking back can cripple us with regret. Only the steadfast forward gaze can keep our feet on the right course and protect us from falling. The beauty of the Christian life is that we do not have to walk alone. The Christ who came at Christmas walks with us.
