What causes wars? Riots? Broken homes? Chaos and conflict? The Bible makes it clear: It starts in the heart.
“For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander” (Matthew 15:19). All attempts to correct social and relational problems are destined to fail without true heart changes. How does this process work? 1. There first must be a desire to change. At some point, one must realize there is a better way. In His teaching, Jesus pointed to a better way — the way of forgiveness and love. 2. Next comes the realization that it is impossible to change yourself. Attitudes are attached to emotions, and these are imbedded in past experience. Self-help falls short when emotions are triggered. 3. Finally, you realize there is only one place to turn. God alone can change the heart and renew the mind and emotions. And He has promised, “And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart” (Ezekiel 36:26 NLT). Is it time for a heart transplant? Next Steps... I will allow God to change the attitudes of my heart so I may love Him and love others as He does.
